HBCU Pride

One of the best things about growing up in the 90s was the plethora of quality, Black sitcoms and TV shows. I’m talking TGIF, BET, ABC, UPN, etc. – all the acronymns that had a lineup of Black content. That content included Family Matters, A Different World, Martin, Living Single and Parenthood, to name just a few!

As a young Black girl, I felt excited for adulthood and couldn’t wait to grow up and be someone like the sporty entrepreneur, Khadijah James; stylish and brainy high school cheerleader, Laura Winslow; boho-chic and free-spirited college freshman, Denise Huxtable; or a bad-ass lawyer and mom like matriarch, Claire Huxtable.

One thing I really miss about that time is the representation of education and HBCUs on said TV shows. It was cool and stylish to be educated and to rep Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

There was representation inside of representation and it spoke to the fashion sense and sheer excellence of the Black culture in a time when magazines like Ebony and Jet were gracing shelves.

I miss seeing that kind of uplifting representation on TV but, as of 2021, we have a Morehouse College alumni as the first, Black Senator of Georgia, a Howard University alumna as the first female, Black and Asian-American Vice President, and they were both aided in the election by a Spelman College alumna! Yaaassss!
