Justice League: Never Stand Alone
Possible Spoilers Below!
Like many, I had been waiting years for the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League…a cut I never thought would see the light of day beyond fans’ wildest dreams and fiery petitions.
But the long-awaited four hour film dropped last Thursday on HBOMax and I’ve got to say:
I was very impressed.
The Zack Snyder cut possessed what its predecessor version was missing: heart and character development that was given time to mash, much like Alfred’s tea. Watching the Snyder cut also reignited my anger on behalf of Ray Fisher because of the racism and toxic environment he experienced while working with Joss Whedon for the first version. Though I don’t know all of the details of his personal situation, I have been there; I know what it can do to you. #IStandwithRay
Ok, back to the film which let the characters be great with their respectives powers, abilities, and personalities. This was most noticeable for The Flash and Cyborg. I like Ezra Miller’s take on the Flash run because it looks like he is throwing the lightning from the Speed Force with his arms. He also looks so cute and happy as if he’s running for the first time, every time. Victor Stone’s extended story arc was a beautiful depiction of acceptance and forgiveness. We were able to see a fuller extent of his power while also seeing the conscience he possesses to only use it for good.
It was nice to see Superman’s comic accurate black suit, classic power punch, and Henry Cavill’s natural, un-altered face. The CGI game across the board was stepped up. I couldn’t help but giggle, though, at Steppenwolf’s baby-doll blue eyes juxtapose to his nightmarish and towering frame. His shiny, metallic armor was so much more intimidating, with spikes that appeared to have a life of their own.
ZSJL also gave us the first cinematic look at the Martian Manhunter, Darkseid, and Ryan Choi (aka Atom). The film was broken into six parts and an epilogue which featured more beloved characters and a deeper look into the Knightmare team and what they were up against in the apocalyptic future hinted at in Batman vs. Superman.
8.2/10
Did you enjoy the Snyder Cut more than the theatrical version? Sound-off in the comments.
