Life After Doom

My husband and I downloaded the popular streaming service HBO Max on Christmas day to watch #WW84. (I’ll get into my thoughts on that film in a later post.) HBO Max offers an assortment of content that, for the most part, isn’t found on Netflix, HULU, or Prime and, especially now as we stay at home more during the pandemic, I am always looking for new movies and TV shows that I can connect with even when they revolve around fantastical elements.

We’ve been catching up on the service’s content the past few weeks, which is the new home to a lot of DC material, and we found a gem in DC’s Doom Patrol. It’s a twist on the classic “superhero” show as the characters battle fewer “monster of the week” villains and more personal demons, with a lot of team and character development seen through the use of flashbacks in addition to present day scenes.

The characters span from the well known Teen Titan and future Justice Leaguer Vic Stone (Cyborg) to new sentient and lovable Danny Street, and a familiar character from just down a well-known brick road. Other main characters include Cliff Steele (Robotman), Larry Trainor (Negative Man), Jane (Crazy Jane), Rita Farr (Elasti-Woman), and Niles Caulder (the Chief).

In my opinion, though not all characters are present, there is no better scene to depict the fun, richness and weirdness of this show, along with its ecelctic group, than Larry’s (Negative Man) karaoke performance of “People Like Us”. Check it out for yourself above and be sure to catch up on DC’s Doom Patrol on HBO Max before season 3!
