WFH: Welcome to the 21st Century!

Who says you can’t look “work chic” while working from home?

I LOVE working remotely. I’m talking live, laugh, love it. While the pandemic was the last reason I wanted as the catalyst, it forced many businesses and organizations to, briefly, slow down and see that there is a real need for more work-life flexibility and choice. Many people like to keep work solely in the office and others are more productive in their own space, with little external distractions and/or running around an office building for meetings and bathroom breaks.

Side note: I realize that I don’t have kids who are also at home with me, which can be hectic and stressful, but I’m not in that chapter of my life yet, so I can’t speak on that experience.

I walk into my beautiful office space in the mornings, that still feels separate from my “home-life”, and it is glowing with the light from the sunrise and I feel at peace instead of being inundated with the buzzing, heavy and often toxic, energy brought in by those around me. I also don’t miss the germs, invasion of privacy, or microaggressions of working in the office.

In this capitalistic, white, patriarchal society that thrives on making “normal” out of catastrophe, I imagine there will be a lot of gaslighting and denial on the other side of the pandemic of the benefits that working remotely afforded many of us in an effort to force us back into expensive buildings currently sitting idle and gathering dust. Mandatory nine hour work days in the office, with however long of a commute, takes a toll and seems like archaic practice in a time when technology and various means of communication are as advanced as ever.
